Regarding Mike's comment. Mike is correct that HDD manufacturers changed from a Base 2 Binary byte numbering system to a metric numbering system for the calculation of HDD sizes.However, before 1998 there were no standard definitions for the values of the metric byte numbering prefixes, e.g, kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta, exa. So the metric prefixes were used for both Base 2 Binary and Base 10 Decimal values. For example, a kilobyte could be either 1,000 bytes or 1,024 bytes depending on the context and both were correct, but 1000 was more correct without further context specifying the Base 2 Binary numbers valididty. Back in the 1990s HDD manufacturers redefined the megabyte to be 1,000,000 bytes for marketing purposes. There is no such thing as the 1,000,000 byte megabyte MB. 1 MB has always been 1,048,576, or 1024 bytes. Just as there is no such thing as the 1,000,000,000,000 terabyte TB. 1 TB has always been 1,099,511,627,776, or 1024 bytes.
