MB to Bytes Conversion

Please enter the megabytes (MB) value to convert to bytes (B).

Megabytes to Bytes
1 MB = 1,000,000 Bytes (in decimal)
1 MB = 1,048,576 Bytes (in binary)

How many Bytes in a Megabyte

1 Megabyte is equal to 1000000 bytes (decimal).
1 MB = 106 B in base 10 (SI).

1 Megabyte is equal to 1048576 bytes (binary).
1 MB = 220 B in base 2.

Difference Between MB and B

Megabyte unit symbol is MB, Byte unit symbol is B.
Megabyte is greater than Byte. MB has the prefix Mega. Megabyte is 1000000 times bigger than Byte.

Megabyte (MB) is a unit of transferred or stored digital information, which is extensively used in information and computer technology. In SI, one megabyte is equal to 1,000,000 bytes. At the same time, practically 1 megabyte is used as 220 B, which means 1,048,576 bytes. Nowadays, the amount of information measured by megabytes is used for representing the size of a typical MP3 file, the size of a JPEG image, and so on.

Megabyte in SI and base 10 (decimal)
1 Megabyte = 10002 bytes
1 Megabyte = 1000000 bytes
Megabyte in base 2 (binary)
1 Megabyte = 220 bytes
1 Megabyte = 10242 bytes
1 Megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes

Byte is the basic unit of digital information transmission and storage, used extensively in information technology, digital technology, and other related fields. It is one of the smallest units of memory in computer technology, as well as one of the most basic data measurement units in programming. The earliest computers were made with the processor supporting 1 byte commands, because in 1 byte you can send 256 commands. 1 byte consists of 8 bits, which go together as one unit in storage, processing or transmission of digital information.

Byte is the base unit
1 Byte = 8 bits

@AussieDev I agree that binary is the de facto standard in Dev, IT, etc. BUT those Marketing folks (grrr) LOVE using decimal to make their specs sound better. So what they sell you as 1 TB drive is exactly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but since in the engineering world 1 GB = 1024^3 and not 1000^3, that same drive is reported by your OS as a 931 GB drive upon formatting. Sneaky devils.

When dealing with files sizes in code you usually use the BINARY value.
What is the purpose of the decimal value and when would you use it?

OK but what's the difference in 3.5mb & 37mb? The first one has a decimal & the second one does not so???
